This is my latest commission. Danny is a retired thoroughbred race horse owned by my friend. I think he's about 19 now. I have ridden him a couple of times. 16" x 12" acrylic on watercolor paper.

I started with a wash for the sky and have started the trees behind him.

To do the leaves I load my brush with lots of paint and just dab it on the paper to create the desired effect. I apply the dots randomly to begin with, with the main color of that particular tree. When the majority of the area is covered I then and my darks and lights in a more orderly fashion to give the trees some depth.

To do this I always use an old paint brush because it ruins the brush really quickly.

I have finished the trees, but forgot to take a picture of them completed on their own.

I then moved on to tall grass just below the tree line. First I blocked in the basic color with a few washes and then added some highlights.

I then added some darks. All with a fine brush.

I then wanted to tone it down slightly as the the grass is in the distance so I placed a couple of light washes over the top with same color I used for the initial washes.

I then moved on to the grass in the field. I put down a very light wash to begin with. I then took a slightly darker green and and put that down in a slightly wavy fashion. I have never done grass like this in acrylic before so I am making it up as I go along!!! My idea is to build up many layers to create a good sense of depth.

I then placed a couple of light green washes over the top again to tone down the pattern slightly. This is how it looks after the washes.
