American Quarter Horses, the first horse breed native to the United States, are one of the most popular breeds in North America. They were named because of their ability to run a distance of a quarter a mile faster than any other breed. Their powerful build and endurance make them a very versatile horse, excelling in racing, western and hunt seat, dressage, jumping and is most popular as a cow horse.
The Quarter Horse was developed in the Carolinas and Virginia, from crossing imported english stallions with mares of Spanish descent. The Quarter Horse did not achieve it's official name until 1940, when the official American Quarter Horse resistry was formed. The first known American Quarter Horse races were held at Enrico County, Virginia in 1674.
The American Quarter Horse is well muscled and compact. It is a very kind horse, with a good and level headed disposition. The average height is about 15 - 15.2 hands. It can come in any of 13 accepted solid colors (by the American Quarter Horse Association), including sorrel, bay, black, brown, buckskin, chestnut, dun, red dun, gray, grullo, palomino, red roan and blue roan. The most common color is chestnut or sorrel. It has limited white markings on the face and below the knees.
